Pay-It-Forward Professionally

It is refreshing to see a pay-it-forward movement in social media. I'm inspired by those who help others unconditionally.

Think of someone who recently exceeded your expectations. You should be more than willing to refer him or her to anyone within your professional network.

Here are 14 additional ways you can pay-it-forward professionally:

  • Become a fan of their Facebook page and post a positive comment to the wall
  • Write them a professional recommendation via LinkedIn or for their website
  • Mail them a nice handwritten note or Hallmark card
  • Write a positive letter to an industry related publication about him or her
  • Introduce him or her one of your other trusted contacts
  • Give a genuine comment on their blog
  • Invite him or her to an upcoming networking or industry related event
  • Create a nice blog post about him or her
  • Promote him or her via Twitter including a link to their blog
  • Call and tell this person why you appreciate them
  • Interview him or her for a podcast or YouTube video
  • Recommend him or her for an award
  • Stop thinking, "What can you do for me?"
  • Start asking, "What can I do for you?"

For more information about the Pay-It-Forward Movement started by the book's author, Catherine Ryan Hyde, check out the Pay It Forward Foundation.

Unleash Your Passion

My path to find my passion began in Iowa. I remember going door-to-door selling Girl Scout calendars when I was twelve years old.  Yes, calendars, not cookies. These calendars didn't even include any coupons. I enjoyed the anticipation of talking to an unsuspecting neighbor and giving my quick sales pitch. Plus, I knew which homes to target when it was Girl Scout cookie time.

In order to navigate the social media waters, it is vital that you understand what motivates you. Think about the unforgettable moments in life where you felt inspired and valued. Reflect on activities or projects that you enjoyed doing regardless of the outcome. It may take a few heart-to-heart talks with a trusted colleague, relative or coach to unlock your passion. Don't let the fear of failing keep you from reaching your goals or true purpose in life.

Launching my social media firm hasn't been an easy feat. It has been fulfilling in many priceless ways. I'm grateful for those who continue to support my goals and I hope to return the favor.

A Tree for the Future

Every spring
The sap rises in the trees
From root to branch
And makes a tree that looks dead
Blossom with green leaves
And life.
So it is that the Scouting Spirit
Rises within you and
Inspires you to put forth
Your best.

- Juliette Gordon Low, Founder of the Girl Scout Movement

Say What You Need to Say

The true beauty of social media is that we can harness its' powers to generate win-win opportunities. You will see a better ROI if you do more than just monitor the social media activities of your customers and competitors.

The song, "Say", by John Mayer is my social networking anthem. It inspired me to stop lurking in social media communities and start contributing. It is a bonus that John Mayer has over 2 million followers on Twitter from his authentic tweets.

Is it time for you to take a leap of faith, continue to listen and finally participate in the online conversations about your industry or company?

You Are What Google Says You Are

When I first read the phrase above, it truly upset me. This isn't fair. I was born and raised in a small town in Iowa with a strong sense of community. Your reputation and values determine one's professional worth. It is comforting to go home where everybody knows your name, just like in the sitcom, "Cheers".

Online you are judged by what is found when someone views your social media footprint by googling your name or your brand. The good news is that we have the ability to contribute and influence what is indexed by Google.

If you are interested in growing your professional network and reach, first analyze your current social media impact, digital strategy and areas for improvement.  It all starts with a goal and a Google search.

Are you ready for the social media revolution?

With the support of my professional colleagues, family and friends, I have decided to follow my dreams and launch a social media consultation firm.  It is an honor to have the opportunity teach individuals and companies how to pay-it-forward using digital tools to reach their goals.  Thank you for your interest in my new venture as the Chief Enthusiast Officer (CEO) of Social Precision.
